Edward Cornelius Kinney Papers (1864-1931). This collection consists of a single diary (labeled Diary volume 2) written by Edward Cornelius Kinney. The diary describes his experiences serving in Company F, 103rd Ohio Volunteers Infantry, as a private soldier during the American Civil War. Additional materials include a transcript of the diary; three photocopies of family photographs; letter to Oberlin College from Kinney regarding "certification of service;" obituaries for Edward and Harriet Kinney; photocopy of photograph of Edward and Harriet's tombstone in Bozeman, Mont.; and summary of service of the 103rd Ohio Volunteers from the American Civil War Research Database. Edward Cornelius Kinney was born in Oberlin, Ohio on February 22, 1845 to Daniel B. and Betsy Matthews Kinney. In 1862 while a student at Oberlin College, Kinney enlisted in the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served until the end of the American Civil War. After the war, he returned to college and studied civil engineering and began working in that capacity in 1868.
